Light Modifier Comparison

The Studio Setup

The flash output for each light modifier is adjusted to achieve a reading of f/8 at ISO 100 on the model. The flash unit is positioned so that the front edge of the modifier is 2.5 meters from the model, with its center aligned to the model's forehead height. The model stands 1.5 meters away from the background paper. Additionally, we measured the amount of light reaching the background paper at a height of 1.5 meters on both the left and right sides.

This ensures the results are comparable. The slightly off-center positioning makes it easy to evaluate effects such as the appearance of the nose shadow or the quality of the shadow rendering.

The individual images

1) The effect of the light modifier on a portrait shot at a focal length of 200 mm. Camera-to-model distance: 300 cm.

2) The effect of the light modifier on a full-length shot.

3) The setup viewed from above. The path of the shadow behind the model is clearly visible.

4) The setup viewed from an elevated angle. The cone of light cast by the modifier is clearly visible, making it easy to assess the amount of expected stray light.

5) The setup viewed from an elevated angle, with additional base lighting.

6) An image of the light modifier showing the flash output required to achieve an aperture of f/8 on the model, along with the aperture values at the measurement points.
